Covering Agent
Cut heat loss from molten steel. Stop secondary oxidation dead.

A Covering Agent — also called a Hot Metal Ladle Covering Flux, Ladle Covering Flux or Tundish Covering Flux depending on where it is applied — is spread on the surface of molten steel to form a protective layer. Working together, three things happen: heat loss slows down, contact with air is blocked so secondary oxidation cannot take place, and non-metallic inclusions rising to the surface are absorbed into the slag layer.
ArcSteel produces Covering Agents in granular and powder form, formulated for three stages of the steelmaking route — the hot metal ladle, the steel ladle and the tundish. Because we manufacture in our own plant rather than reselling, the melting behaviour, bulk density and particle size distribution can be adjusted to match your furnace practice and the steel grades you cast.
If you are not sure which grade fits your line, we will run a trial batch and send our engineers to work through the results with you. That is the part most traders cannot offer.
By product form
- Grade
Granular Covering Agent
Free-flowing and low dust — suits both manual spreading and machine feeding.
- Grade
Powder Covering Agent
Melts faster and covers the bath surface more completely per unit weight.
By steelmaking stage
- Grade
Hot Metal Ladle Covering Flux
For hot metal ladles and torpedo cars — limits the temperature drop before charging into the converter.
- Grade
Ladle Covering Flux
Protects the bath from tapping through refining and ladle transport.
- Grade
Tundish Covering Flux
For continuous casting — insulates the tundish bath, absorbs inclusions and helps keep nozzle clogging under control.
What it does for your line
- Slower temperature drop — casting temperature stays consistent from ladle to tundish
- Blocks air contact so secondary oxidation and rephosphorisation are suppressed
- Absorbs non-metallic inclusions and helps them float out of the steel
- Reduces thermal shock on the refractory lining and extends ladle life
- Low dust and low fume — noticeably better conditions on the casting floor
- Formulation, melting range and packing customised to your plant

Figures above are indicative. Contact us to confirm against your steel grades and furnace practice.
All grades can be customised — composition, particle size, melting behaviour, alkalinity and packaging are all adjustable. Send us your steel grade and furnace practice — we will recommend an existing grade or formulate one to suit.

Exothermic Hot Topping Compound
Keep the riser liquid. Get sound castings and a higher yield.
A thermit-type compound that ignites on contact with molten steel and keeps the riser head hot while the casting solidifies — so shrinkage cavities and pipe stay in the riser, not in your product.

Slag Fluidizer
Thins the slag you already have — so the lime dissolves and the reactions speed up.
A Slag Fluidizer, not a slag former. Added at the converter or the refining ladle, it penetrates viscous high-lime slag, breaks down the calcium silicate network and pulls the melting point down — so lime that was sitting undissolved goes into solution and the slag you already paid for can finally do its job.

Ingot Teeming Flux
Clean ingot surfaces. Fewer dressing hours. Less scrap.
Added to the mould during teeming, this flux forms a protective liquid layer that keeps oxygen away from the rising steel, lubricates the mould wall and helps gas and inclusions escape — for a smoother ingot surface straight out of the mould.
